Piccadilly Circus is het middelpunt van de hoofdstad en ooit de navel van het Empire. Te midden van het drukke verkeer rond het plein verpozen veel bezoekers graag even op de trappen van de Erosfontein. In 1893 liet Alfred Gilbert dit monument bouwen ter ere van de filantroop Anthony Ashley Cooper, de zevende Earl of Shaftesbury. Die edelman had in de 19de eeuw de massale armoede met zijn eigen kapitaal bestreden door gaarkeukens in te richten en scholen te laten bouwen. De gevleugelde engel met pijl en boog boven op de fontein is dus duidelijk geen voorstelling van de god der liefde maar wel een allegorie van de dode Earl of Shaftesbury (shaft = pijl, bury = begraven).
