Piccadilly Circus est le centre de la capitale et autrefois le nombril de l'Empire. Au milieu de la circulation animée autour de la place, de nombreux visiteurs aiment se reposer un moment sur les marches de la fontaine d'Eros. En 1893, Alfred Gilbert fit construire ce monument en l'honneur du philanthrope Anthony Ashley Cooper, le septième comte de Shaftesbury. Ce noble avait, au 19ème siècle, combattu la pauvreté massive avec son propre capital en ouvrant des soupes populaires et en faisant construire des écoles. L'ange ailé avec un arc et des flèches sur la fontaine n'est donc clairement pas une représentation du dieu de l'amour, mais une allégorie du défunt comte de Shaftesbury (shaft = flèche, bury = enterré).
