De Rio - Antirion-brug is een meesterwerk in engineering. Om deze brug te bouwen en te laten blijven staan moest rekening gehouden worden met de volgende uitdagingen: De brug moet tegen gigantische aardschokken bestendig zijn want de brug staat in een zeer seismisch actief gebied. Ze passeert een van de meest actieve breuklijnen in Europa. De brug kan schokken aan van 7.4 op de schaal van Richter. Daarnaast moest de brug nog gebouwd worden op een onstabiele ondergrond van zand en grint. En de brug is gebouwd in een natuurlijke windtunnel die zeer krachtige windstoten oplevert. Daarnaast schuiven de twee landsgedeelten aan beide kanten van de brug uit elkaar.
