Vanaf de late oudheid werd het Kastro versterkt om tegen piraten en indringers te beschermen. De huidige dorpsstructuur volgt het principe van een compacte nederzetting, waarbij huizen aaneengeschakeld zijn als natuurlijke verdedigingsmuur. Kleine ramen, hoge deuropeningen en een gebrek aan straatopeningen onderstrepen het verdedigingskarakter van het dorp. In de middeleeuwen werd het Kastro het machtscentrum van Sifnos, met als herkenningspunt de overblijfselen van de residentie van de heersers en meerdere historische kerken.
