Volos is de hoofdstad van Magnesia, een regio in Griekenland. Hier werd een merkwaardig gesteente gevonden, vernoemd naar de regio waar het zich bevindt: magnetiet. Wetenschapper Thales merkte op dat het gesteente een onzichtbare aantrekkingskracht uitoefende op metaal. Hij merkte ook op dat wanneer je het over een stuk barnsteen wreef, een substantie die de Grieken elektron noemden, het een mysterieuze lading kreeg.
