Milies is a typisch voorbeeld voor wat de Franse geografen "l'haibtat pêrché" of "hangende bewoning" noemen. Mensen in afgelegen en niet zo goed beschermde gebieden zoals op het Pilion schiereiland kozen er voor om hogerop in de bergen te leven, omdat dat veel veiliger was enkele eeuwen geleden. De onvelidigheid nabij de kust werd veroorzaakt door piraterij en malaria.
