Amaril of korundiet is een donker, korrelig gesteente dat wordt gebruikt voor de productie van schuurpoeder. Gemalen of natuurlijk geërodeerd amaril (ook wel zwart zand genoemd) wordt gebruikt als schuurmiddel – bijvoorbeeld op een nagelvijl en schuurdoek, en als tractieverbeteraar in asfalt- en teermengsels. Turkije en Griekenland zijn de belangrijkste leveranciers van amaril ter wereld. Het Griekse eiland Naxos was vroeger de belangrijkste bron van dit industrieel belangrijke gesteente. Het werd meer dan tweeduizend jaar lang aan de oostkant van Naxos gewonnen, tot recentelijk. De vraag naar amaril is echter afgenomen door de ontwikkeling van gesinterde carbide- en oxidematerialen als schuurmiddelen. Een kleine hoeveelheid amaril wordt gebruikt in gecoate schuurproducten, maar in de Verenigde Staten wordt het voornamelijk gebruikt voor slijtvaste vloeren en bestratingen. Vele tonnen worden naar Azië verscheept om te worden gebruikt bij het malen van rijst.
