Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd Pilio, net als de rest van Griekenland, zwaar getroffen door de bezetting van nazi-Duitsland. Griekenland werd in april 1941 binnengevallen door de Duitsers na een eerdere Italiaanse aanval. De bezetting duurde ruim drie jaar en leidde tot grote ontberingen: veel dorpen werden verwoest, de bevolking leed onder honger, represailles en executies, en de economie en infrastructuur werden grotendeels vernietigd.
In Pilio trokken veel bewoners na de oorlog weg vanwege de armoede en verwoestingen; sommigen zochten werk in Volos of West-Europa, waardoor de bergdorpen, waaronder Portarià, dreigden leeg te lopen.
