Ierland is een Europees land dat ongeveer 80 procent van het gelijknamige eiland beslaat. De andere twintig procent van dit eiland behoort tot Noord-Ierland, een regio met ruime vorm van zelfbestuur, dat tot het Verenigd Koninkrijk behoort.
Om het land van het eiland te onderscheiden wordt het aangeduid als de Republiek Ierland . Deze aanduiding heeft sinds 1949 de status van officiële beschrijving van het land. De officiële, protocollaire naam is echter, sinds 1937, kortweg Ierland.
