Mick O'Dwyer speelde Gaelic football met zijn lokale club Waterville en was lid van het Kerry seniorteam van 1956 tot 1974. O'Dwyer diende later als manager van Kildare, Laois en Wicklow en Clare, maar het was als beheerder van het Kerry senior voetbalteam van 1975 tot 1989, dat hij de iconische status kreeg van meest succesvolle manager allertijden. In juni 2012 is dit beeld in Waterville opgericht om zijn prestaties te eren.
