Pontedera is een industriële Toscaanse stad die gekend is omdat hier de fabriek gevestigd is van Vespa, het beroemde scoortermerk. Het bedrijf Piaggio ontwikkelde de Vespa net na Wereldoorlog II. Er was toen een grote nood aan een betaalbaar tranportmiddel. Wist je dat de ingenieurr D'Ascanio die de eerste Vespa ontwierp ook de eerste helicopter in 1930 designde? Tijdens WO II werd de Pontedera fabriek volledig vernield door de geallieerde bommenwerpers. Het herstel van die fabriek lag aan de oorsprong van de Vespa. Het eerste prototype was MP5 of de Moto Piaggio 5, ontzwikkeld in 1945. Die werd bekend als de Paperino (Donald Duck). De opvolger, de MP6 werd de Vespa genoemd omdat die er uit zag als een wesp (wesp is Vespa is het Italiaans).
