Bologna is de hoofdstad van de regio Emilia-Romagna en van de Metropolitane Stad Bologna, tussen de rivieren Reno en Savena, dicht bij de Apennijnen. Het ligt op 90 km van Florence, iets meer dan een uur met de trein van Parma, en op 150 km van Venetië, in het noordoosten. Het is een van de best bewaarde historische steden en de zevende grootste van Italië qua bevolking.
