Bologna er hovedstaden i regionen Emilia-Romagna og i den Metropolitanske By Bologna, mellem floderne Reno og Savena, tæt på Apenninerne. Det ligger 90 km fra Firenze, lidt over en time med tog fra Parma, og 150 km fra Venedig mod nordøst. Det er en af de bedst bevarede historiske byer og den syvende største i Italien målt på befolkning.
