Nadat Duitsland het schilderij Het Lam Gods moest terug geven aan België zoals beschreven staat in het Verdag van Versailles, en de Belgen een dreiging van WO II zagen komen, werd in 1940 beslist om het schilderij een veilig onderkomen te geven in het Vaticaan. Toen het schilderij op weg was naar het Vaticaan verklaarde Italië de oorlog samen met Duitsland en werden de plannen aangepast. Men verkoos om het schilderij naar Pau in Frankrijk te brengen.
