Het heiligdom van San Romedio groeide van een klein kerkje uit tot het populaire bedevaartsoord en de basiliek van het Santuario di San Romedio. San Romedio leefde in de 4e eeuw. Hij was een zoon van de Tiroolse graaf van Thaur, maar trok zich terug in een rotsgrot om te mediteren. Na de dood van zijn ouders schonk hij al zijn bezittingen weg en vestigde zich in de Val di Non (Duits: Nonstal) in Trentino.
Romedius wordt vaak in verband gebracht met een beer. Het verhaal gaat dat zijn paard door een wilde beer werd verscheurd. De beer werd tam en droeg Romedius op zijn rug naar Trento. Ter nagedachtenis aan deze legende kocht de Italiaanse senator Gallarati Scotti, erelid van het comité voor de oprichting van het Wereld Natuur Fonds in Italië, in 1958 Charlie, een beer die bestemd was om gedood te worden, en schonk hem aan het heiligdom van San Romedio in de Valle di Non.
