Giordano Bruno werd in 1592 gearresteerd door de inquisitie wegens ketterij. Na een jarenlang proces in Rome weigerde hij zijn opvattingen over onder meer het heelal, de ziel en religieuze dogma’s te herroepen. Op 8 februari 1600 werd hij tot de dood veroordeeld. Op 17 februari 1600 werd hij op het Campo de’ Fiori in Rome levend verbrand op de brandstapel, nadat hij aan de wereldlijke autoriteiten was overgedragen. Zijn boeken kwamen op de lijst van verboden werken van de katholieke kerk.
