De naam Boccaccio kom je tijdens het bezoek aan Certaldo veelvuldig tegen. Deze schrijver, dichter en humanist, die leefde tussen 1313 en 1375, is de beroemdste inwoner van Certaldo. Hij is vooral bekend van Decamerone, een raamvertelling van verhalen van jongeren die Florence tijdens de pestepidemie van 1348 zijn ontvlucht. Boccaccio is in Certaldo Alto – naar men aanneemt – begraven in de kerk van SS. Jacopo e Filippo. Hier is een buste van hem te vinden.
