Litouwen ligt op de westelijke rand van de Oost-Europese laagvlakte, met uitgestrekte morene‑vlaktes op hoogten tussen circa 50 en 150 meter. Tussen deze vlaktes rijzen brede hooglanden op, zoals de Samogitische hoogvlakte in het westen en de Medininkai‑hoogten ten zuidoosten van Vilnius. De hoogste natuurlijke punt, Aukštojas (ca. 294 meter), ligt in deze oostelijke hoogten en illustreert hoe minimaal het relatieve reliëf is: topografie is hier vooral een kwestie van glaciale volumeverdeling, niet van tektonische opheffing.
