Het grootvorstendom werd gesticht door de Litouwers, een van de heidense Baltische stammen, die van oorsprong in Aukštaitija woonden.
Nadat vorst Mindaugas zich had laten dopen, kreeg hij in 1253 van paus Innocentius IV de koningstitel en ontstond het koninkrijk Litouwen. In 1263 werden hij en zijn zoons vermoord, de Litouwers bekeerden zich weer tot het heidendom en de koningstitel verviel.
