Het kleine dorp Esch-sur-Sûre - 250 inwoners - ligt op een soort schiereiland dat door de Sauer omgeven is. Het wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste dorpen in het Groothertogdom Luxemburg. Het wordt gedomineerd door een torenruïne en enkele restanten van de middeleeuwse burcht (927). De rots lijkt uit de rivier te komen. Esch bleef lange tijd een geïsoleerd dorp. Om het te ontsluiten, werd in 1850 een tunnel geboord. Een tweede tunnel werd in 1954 gegraven naar de dam en het meer. Dit kunstmatige meer, dat is aangelegd voor de waterbehoeften, is zo in het landschap geïntegreerd dat het als een gril van de natuur lijkt.
