De Geraamtekust werd door de Portugese zeelieden de poorten naar de hel genoemd. Als je hier ooit schipbreuk hebt geleden, was dat het einde van je reis. De stroming was te sterk om vanaf de kust terug te roeien naar een boot. Er is een constante, zware branding op de stranden. Naar het binnenland gaan, of naar het zuiden of noorden langs de kust zijn honderden kilometers woestijn om over te steken. Neerslag is zelden meer dan 10 millimeter per jaar en het klimaat is zeer onherbergzaam. De kans dat je hier schipbreuk zou lijden was vrij groot, zoals veel van de oude schepen in het zand bewijzen. Het opwellen van de koude Benguela-stroom zorgt voor een groot deel van het jaar voor dichte oceaanmist. Dus veel schepen verdwaalden in de mist en strandden op het strand.
