In Enkhuizen werd Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer geboren in 1533. Hij zou later een beroemde cartograaf worden. Hij is de auteur van het werk 'Spieghel der Zeevaerdt', de oudste gedrukte zeeatlas. In dat werk werden standaardsymbolen voor ankerplaatsen, gevaren onder water, bakens, kapen en boeien aangegeven.
