Laren werd na de komst van de tramlijn naar Hilversum en Amsterdam, gekend als de Gooise Moordenaar, in 1892 ook een kunstenaars- en forensendorp. In de 19e eeuw werden de Gooise dorpen ontdekt door kunstenaars die er de Larense School vestigden. Enkele bekende kunstschilders die in Laren verbleven waren Anton Mauve (leermeester van Vincent van Gogh), Jan Sluijters en Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig.
