Assen ; Drents: Assen ) is een gemeente en stad in het noorden van de Nederlandse provincie Drenthe, waarvan het de hoofdstad is.De gemeente telt 69.042 inwoners en heeft een totale oppervlakte van 83,45 km², waarvan 81,89 km² land en 1,56 km² water . Een inwoner van Assen wordt een Assenaar genoemd. Assen is onderdeel van het samenwerkingsverband regio Groningen-Assen.
