Stavoren is een stad in de gemeente Súdwest-Fryslân, in de Nederlandse provincie Friesland. De stad is een van de Friese elf steden en was de eerste Nederlandse stad die stadsrechten verkreeg.Stavoren is een voormalige Hanzestad en was tijdens de hoge middeleeuwen een belangrijke handelshaven. Een bekende sage die zich afspeelt in de stad is die van Het Vrouwtje van Stavoren waarin een verklaring wordt gegeven voor het verval als belangrijke handelsstad tegen het eind van de middeleeuwen toen de stad steeds meer te lijden had van de concurrentie met Amsterdam en Antwerpen.
