Wirdum ligt even ten zuiden van de stad Leeuwarden, tussen de dorpen Wytgaard en Swichum. Het dorpsgebied ligt tussen de Wirdumervaart/Ringsloot en de Zwette. Bij de dorpskern komen de Wirdumervaart en de Nieuwe Vaart samen. Het dorp vormt samen met Swichum een tweelingdorp. Ze hebben samen ook een dorpsbelangenvereniging.
