Ferwerd ligt ten noordoosten van Leeuwarden, tussen de terpdorpen Hogebeintum en Marrum. De dorpskern ligt aan de zuidkant van de N357, nabij de Waddenzee.In 2021 telde het dorp 1.780 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap De Rijp. Ferwerd werkt op meerdere fronten samen met Hogebeintum, zoals met de gezamenlijke dorpsbelangenvereniging.
