De verviervoudiging van de bevolking in de 17de eeuw ging ook gepaard met een tekort aan hygiënische voorzienigheden die leidden tot vele ziektes zoals cholera, pest en tuberculose. Zo stierven 3 van de 4 kinderen van Rembrant reeds na enkele maanden. Hun graven bevinden zich aan het plein achter de Zuiderkerk. Ook zijn vrouw Saskia stierf aan zeer jonge leeftijd (29). Haar graf bevindt zich in de Oude Kerk, aan de eerste nis links van het orgel. Ook zijn latere levensgezelling Hendrickje, zijn zoon Titus en zijn schoondochter Magdalena stierven vroegtijdig. Ze liggen samen met Rembrandt zelf in de Westerkerk begraven.
