Het ligt ten zuiden van Menaldum, direct aan de autosnelweg de A31 tussen Franeker en Leeuwarden en aan het Van Harinxmakanaal. Even ten zuiden van het dorp ligt het station aan de spoorlijn Leeuwarden-Harlingen Haven.Lokaal spreekt men ook van De Ryp. In 2021 telde het dorp 3.275 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen de buurtschappen De Poelen, Hatsum, Rewerd en een stukje van de buurtschap Kingmatille.
