Het ligt ten zuidoosten van Drachten en ten noordwesten Oosterwolde, tussen Hemrik en Bakkeveen in. Het dorp telde in 2021 2.055 inwoners. Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Klein Groningen, Moskou , Petersburg , Sparjebird en Wijnjeterpverlaat.Het dorp is in 1974 ontstaan door de samenvoeging van de dorpen Wijnjeterp en Duurswoude met de porte-manteaunaam Wijnjewoude, een samentrekking van de twee plaatsnamen. De twee voormalige dorpen behoorden tot de oudere bewoonde plekken van de gemeente.
