Het ligt aan de provinciale weg N357 ten noorden van de stad Leeuwarden, tussen Finkum en Britsum. Langs en door het dorpsgebied stromen onder andere de Dokkumer Ee, de Stienservaart en de Finkumervaart. In 2021 telde het dorp 7.695 inwoners.Onder het dorp vallen ook de buurtschappen Horne, Tichelwerk, Truurd, Vrouwbuurtstermolen en een klein stukje van Bartlehiem. Stiens was van 1965 tot 2018 de hoofdplaats van de voormalige gemeente Leeuwarderadeel.
