Het ligt even ten westen van de stad Franeker en ten oosten van Midlum. Het dorp ligt aan de Rijksweg en aan een aftakking van het Van Harinxmakanaal. Aan de noordkant loopt de A31. In 2021 telde het dorp 260 inwoners.Tussen Franeker en Herbaijum ligt ook de buurtschap Kiesterzijl. De dorpsbelangenvereniging is er ook voor Kiesterzijl en ook wel voor de buurtschap Kie, die beide onder Franeker vallen formeel.
