Het ligt ten oostnoordoosten van Balk en ten noorden van Oudega, aan de oostkant van het meer de Fluessen. In 2021 telde het dorp 360 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt ook de buurtschap Trophorne.Van oorsprong was Elahuizen twee verschillende dorpen; Nijega en Elahuizen. Elahuizen was noordelijk gelegen van Nijega. In 1412 werd de plaats vermeld als Elahuysen, in 1487 als toe Eylahuysen, in 1492 als Elehuusen, in 1505 Elahuysum en in 1579 als Elahusen De plaatsnaam verwijst naar een nederzetting van persoon Ele, of van de afstammelingen daarvan.
