Het ligt ten zuidoosten van Sneek en ten noordwesten van Joure. Samen met de net noordelijke gelegen Terkaple en Goingarijp vormt het een veel samenwerkende gemeenschap.Akmarijp vormt samen met Terkaple tevens een tweelingdorp, het heeft een gecombineerde dorpsbelangenvereniging. In 2021 telde het dorp 110 inwoners en daarmee de kleinste van de drie dorpen. De bewoning van het dorp ligt aan de Fjildwei en de Leeuwardenweg en is een echt lintdorp.
