In de ijstijd zo’n 200.000 jaar geleden is het Veluwemassief ontstaan. De ijsmassa uit het noorden stuwde de bodem op tot hoge stuwwallen, waaronder die van de Veluwe. In een latere ijstijd kwam het ijs niet tot het huidige Nederland maar op de stuwwal lag wel een grote hoeveelheden sneeuw. Toen het warmer werd zorgde het smeltende sneeuwwater voor ondiepe zogenaamde ‘sneeuwsmeltwaterdalen’ en zo is ook het Wenumse beekdal ontstaan.
