Het ligt ten zuidoosten van de stad Leeuwarden. Het dorp ligt aan beide zijde van de Wartenaagsterwijd, die het Langdeel via de Rogsloot verbindt met het Prinses Margrietkanaal en de Langesloot. Die laatste verbindt het dorp met het natuur- en watersportgebied Nationaal Park De Oude Venen, dat deels binnen het dorpsgebied valt.
