Appingedam ) is een stad en voormalige gemeente in de gemeente Eemsdelta in de provincie Groningen in het noorden van Nederland. Het aantal inwoners per 31 januari 2022 was 11.465.Het stadje Appingedam, gelegen aan het Damsterdiep, was vroeger de hoofdstad van Fivelingo. Het is tezamen met de stad Groningen een van de twee plaatsen met historische stadsrechten in de provincie. Het centrum van de plaats is een beschermd stadsgezicht met uitbreiding.
