Ridderhofstad Bolestein is ontstaan uit een 14de eeuwse woontoren, gebouwd door ridder Derck de Bole, die schepen van Utrecht was. Tal van belangrijke bewoners zouden na hem Bolestein bezitten. In de 17de eeuw werd het kasteel verbouwd tot buitenplaats, maar het huidige uiterlijk kreeg het huis pas aan het begin van de 19de eeuw. Van 1942-60 was het huis eigendom van de gemeente Maarssen. Het oorspronkelijke plan om er gemeentehuis van te maken ging niet door. Wel werd het politiebureau. De vorige bewoner van Bolestein was de bekende filmregisseur Mathijs van Heiningen. Momenteel is het in handen van een bekende zakenman die het huis in 2000 grondig gerestaureerd heeft.
