Zuidzande is zijn bestaan ooit begonnen als een klein eiland ten zuidoosten van het veel grotere Eiland van Cadzand. Dankzij inpolderingen in de 16e en de 17e eeuw zijn ze met elkaar vergroeid. Aan de ligging van de dijken tussen de polders kun je dat nog zien.
