Het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen is een ziekenhuis in de stad Groningen. De drie kerntaken zijn gezondheidszorg, onderwijs en onderzoek. Het ziekenhuis staat in de Groningse wijk Centrum. Het UMCG is het samenwerkingsverband dat op 13 januari 2005 is ontstaan tussen het voormalige Academisch Ziekenhuis Groningen en de faculteit der Medische Wetenschappen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. In Nederland zijn de universiteiten verantwoordelijk voor het onderzoek- en onderwijsbeleid en de academische ziekenhuizen zijn verantwoordelijk voor patiëntenzorg, werkplaatsfunctie en opleiding tot medisch specialist. Deze taken zijn onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden.
