Eens was dit de hoofdroute van de rivier de Rijn en was hier dus ook de noordelijke grens van het Romeinse Rijk. In de loop van de jaren verlegde de Rijn de loop meer in de richting van de Lek, de rivier werd smaller en ondieper. In 1122 werd door de Utrechtse bisschop Godebald besloten dat de Rijn bij Duurstede moest worden afgedamd. Zo kwam er een einde aan een belangrijke verbindingsroute tussen Wijk bij Duurstede en Utrecht. De Kromme Rijn is 26km lang, gemiddeld
2 meter diep en 10 tot 15 meter breed.
