Het is een grensoverschrijdend natuurgebied dat in België De Maatjes wordt genoemd en in Nederland Matjens. Aan Nederlandse zijde bedraagt de oppervlakte van het rietreservaat ongeveer 40 ha, aan Vlaamse kant ca.10 ha.Oorspronkelijk was het hoogveen dat hier in de loop van de 16e en 17e eeuw is afgegraven. Jarenlang had het gebied te kampen met verdroging, maar door diverse maatregelen is het Nederlandse deel er een stuk natter op geworden. Nu is het een gebied met rietvelden, broekbosjes en natte weilanden. Zeldzame riet- en weidevogels hebben er hun broedplaats.
