19 geestelijken werden in de eerste helft van juni 1572 door opstandige calvinisten in Gorkum gearresteerd, kort na de inname van de stad door de watergeuzen. Zij werden daarna via diverse plaatsen naar Den Briel overgebracht, waar zij werden vastgehouden. De executie vond plaats op 9 juli 1572: die dag werden de martelaren in Den Briel opgehangen in een schuur bij het voormalige klooster. In de katholieke traditie geldt 9 juli sindsdien als de gedenkdag van de Martelaren van Gorcum.
