Nijmegen ) is een stad en gemeente in de Nederlandse provincie Gelderland, dicht bij de grens met Duitsland. De gemeente telt 179.073 inwoners en is qua inwonertal de grootste gemeente van Gelderland en daarnaast de tiende van Nederland.De stad ligt grotendeels op de zuidelijke oever van de Waal, aan de voet van een stuwwal. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog breidde de stad zich naar het zuiden en westen uit. Eind jaren negentig volgde de uitbreiding naar het noorden, de rivier over: de zogenoemde Waalsprong. In het gebied rond en tussen de reeds bestaande dorpen Lent, Ressen en Oosterhout is vanaf eind jaren negentig veel nieuwbouw gepleegd.
