De Lier is een plaats in de provincie Zuid-Holland. De plaats telt 12.480 inwoners . Tot 1 januari 2004 was De Lier een zelfstandige gemeente, maar door een gemeentelijke herindeling ging deze op in de gemeente Westland samen met de gemeenten Monster, Naaldwijk, 's-Gravenzande en Wateringen.De naam De Lier komt van het riviertje de Lee. In geschriften spreekt men van de Lihora . Maar het grootste deel van de plaatselijke bevolking sprak geen Latijn, waardoor het watertje bekendstond als de Leer, Lede of Lee. In het oud Germaans betekent dit: weg of doorgang, te water of op het land. Men had het dus over het dorp aan de Leer, later afgekort tot De Leer. Dit werd vaak zuiver uitgesproken als De Lier, de naam die de plaats tegenwoordig nog steeds draagt.
