Tussen 30 mei en 4 juni 1940 worden in de regio Gent ruim 52.000 Belgische en Franse krijgsgevangenen vervoerd naar de haven van Walsoorden in Zeeland. In open bietenwagons over de tramlijn van de ZVTM rijden de krijgsgevangenen dwars door het centrum van Axel. De Duitsers verboden de Axelse bevolking nadrukkelijk om deze gevangenen te voorzien van eten en drinken. Deze foto toont dat de Axelaars zich weinig van dit verbod aantrokken. Waar mogelijk geven zij voedsel en drinken aan de hongerige krijgsgevangenen. Tussen deze groep mannen bevonden zich ook soldaten uit de Franse koloniën. Zij trokken veel bekijks, omdat de meeste inwoners van Axel nog nooit een donkere man gezien hadden. In de haven van Walsoorden werden de krijgsgevangenen ingescheept en vervolgens naar Duitsland vervoerd.
