De stad heeft 29.353 inwoners . De gemeente grenst in het noordwesten aan Ringsaker, in het noorden aan Åmot, in het oosten aan Løten en in het zuiden aan Stange.
Hamar werd tussen 500 en 1000 na Christus gesticht aan het meer Mjøsa, het grootste meer van Noorwegen. In 1152 werd het hoofdstad van een bisdom. Hamar was de enige middeleeuwse stad in Noorwegen buiten de kustregionen.
