Hamar est une ville et municipalité dans le comté du Hedmark, en Norvège, située au cœur d'une région de 85 000 habitants, qui fut un centre de pouvoir important à l'époque Viking et le siège d'un évêché et un lieu d'échanges commerciaux au Moyen Âge, et qui compte parmi les plus importantes zones agricoles du pays.
Hamar est située sur les rives du lac Mjøsa, le plus grand de Norvège, et est la principale ville du comté de Hedmark. Elle est bordée au nord ouest par Ringsaker, au nord par Åmot, à l'est par Løten, et au sud par Stange.
