Auschwitz-Birkenau was het tweede van de drie grote kampen van het concentratiekampcomplex Auschwitz. Auschwitz-Birkenau was een vernietigingskamp. Het is dit kamp waaraan de meeste mensen denken bij het horen van de naam 'Auschwitz'. Het werd op 1 maart 1942 officieel geopend en was oorspronkelijk bedoeld als een kamp voor Russische krijgsgevangenen.
