Das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau war das größte deutsche Vernichtungslager im NS-Staat. Andere geläufige Bezeichnungen sind KZ Auschwitz-Birkenau und KZ Auschwitz II, zeitgenössisch auch K.L. Auschwitz-Birkenau. Es wurde 1941 drei Kilometer entfernt vom Stammlager Auschwitz I auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Brzezinka errichtet. Es befand sich nahe bei der Stadt Oświęcim im nach der Besetzung Polens vom Deutschen Reich annektierten und als Verwaltungseinheit neu errichteten Landkreis Bielitz. Das Konzentrationslager wurde am 27. Januar 1945 durch Truppen der Roten Armee befreit.
